Education Notes

When a child who is 4 or 5 and is resettled in the United States and does not go to kindergarten that first year, then the following year it is then the responsibility of the refugee parent (not the resettlement agency) to enroll their child into school the following year.

School buses

Within 2 miles, the child must walk to school. Outside of 2 miles, school buses will be provided.


After-school programs

There are many after school programs taking place in Vickery!

The IRC has one at the IVY's in 602.

Catholic Charities has an after school program.

Scofield Memorial Church offers a program on Monday nights at the IRC Ivy site

Watermark offers an afterschool program on Wed nights at the same site. 

The various elementary schools offer afterschool programs.

Youth Believing in Change is an After-School-Program and also has a summer program that reached many refugee children this year located at 10310 N. Central Expressway, Dallas, Tx 75231

The Lake Highlands Church offers a Refugee Support Center that is located at the IVY's in apartment 117 that is open for assistance. The director and co-director are Aaron and Izzie Roepke. 214-502-1438.

4-6 IRC After-School Program for Kingergarten-6 th grade. This class begins again on January 18th.

6:30-8:00 Money Smart (Conducted by Mosaic Family Services)
Tuesdays and Thursdays –
9-11:30 English as a Second Language (Conducted by Catholic Charities: Please bring your I-94 to your first class). This class begins again on January 5.
4-6 IRC After-School Program for 7th grade through 12th grade. This class begins again on January 17th.

Job Training

JOB - Joint Occupations Basic Skills (JOBS) program.

El Centro College offers JOBS training for many well-paying maintenance and construction jobs. Students undergoing this training will have a head start for entry into such careers as machinists, welders, electricians, plumbers and pipe fitters, maintenance and construction workers. Financial aid is available for those who qualify.
